ADHD and Addiction

ADHD and substance use are often tied. Patients with ADHD, in the absence of effective treatment, often self-medicate. Self-medication rarely creates stability and increases the risk of addiction.

The standard treatment of ADHD includes stimulants. Stimulants are controlled substances because they can be abused, leading to addiction. Stimulants are commonly abused throughout the lifespan, but especially in the college years.

ADHD in Women

ADHD is often stereotyped as a condition of hyperactive, misbehaving boys. In fact, ADHD is common in girls as well as boys. ADHD in women presents as a wandering mind with wandering attention. It is commonly ignored.

In women, ADHD is a common, lifelong condition that creates lifelong impairment. This lifelong impairment can be mild to severe. A woman with ADHD often has a mother with ADHD or children with ADHD. I have several women with ADHD who bring their ADHD children to their visit with me. Many ADHD women recognize their ADHD when their child is diagnosed – then they see their own history clearly.

Real gender differences are commonly misunderstood in medicine. Women with adult ADHD have a different life course than men, with distinct challenges in school, relationships, and career development.

My last doctor passed away and he was amazing, but the Conway clinic staff is also very amazing, they care. Some clinics are money motivated but Dr Conway is not just recovery oriented but he also wants to keep u healthy. If u need MAT or recovery service this is your place, there in no better. This review was 3 years ago and I am still with them and they are still the best recovery clinic. They know your names and your story and don't have to look in a file for it. I've always had great experiences there with Dr conway and all of his staff as well. I definitely recommend to anyone needing addiction treatment.  They've never made me feel judged, or looked down on me for anything. I can't say that about other local treatment clinics I've been too. This has been the only place that's worked for me.
