What to Expect During Your Adult ADHD Evaluation in Nashville

What to Expect During Your Adult ADHD Evaluation in Nashville

Your comprehensive evaluation for adult ADHD and coexisting medical and psychiatric diseases will take 1 to 2 hours to complete. During this time, I will gather information necessary to develop a treatment plan that we both support. I will also need to understand your preferences and priorities. Together, through shared medical decision-making, we create a plan to be implemented. Your treatment will be implemented over weeks to months and revised continuously.

Adult ADHD is common in my Nashville practice. Many adults have lived for years with distractability, unfinished work, and chronic exhaustion. They work hard, but fall short of their own expectations. Some were treated in childhood, but they discontinued treatment when they left their pediatrician.

Not every patient who seeks an adult ADHD evaluation ultimately has ADHD, and careful diagnosis is essential to ensure that you do begin a serious treatment which you do not need.

You may benefit from an adult ADHD evaluation in Nashville if:

  • You are easily distracted.
  • You work long hours, but accomplish less than expected.
  • You feel chronically overwhelmed.
  • Impulsivity affects relationships or finances.
  • You use substances to cope.
  • You were treated for ADHD as a child.

ADHD in adulthood differs from ADHD in childhood. Executive dysfunction becomes more prominent. You have difficulty organizing, prioritizing, or sustaining effort. Over time, this affects career advancement, finances, and relationships.

A comprehensive ADHD evaluation confirms or rules out ADHD and identifies contributing psychiatric and medical factors.

What Makes a Comprehensive Adult ADHD Evaluation Different

What Makes a Comprehensive Adult ADHD Evaluation Different?

An adult ADHD evaluation within internal medicine evaluation is structured and deliberate.

The evaluation begins with your description of your difficulties. The history begins with a struggle or failure in adulthood that persists for years. Work may be impaired. Relationships may be strained. Financial stability may suffer. Career advancement may stall.

A comprehensive evaluation includes:

  • Psychiatric history, including mood disorders
  • Chronic medical illnesses
  • Medication List
  • Substance use history
  • Family History, especially bipolar and ADHD
  • Social History

ADHD rarely exists in isolation. Symptoms often overlap with mood disorders, anxiety, and substance use, and must be differentiated carefully. ADHD often runs in families. Parents or relatives may have had undiagnosed ADHD. Many adults first recognize their ADHD when their child is diagnosed.

ADHD and Chronic Medical Conditions

ADHD commonly overlaps with other psychiatric and medical conditions that must be considered during evaluation. Most adults with ADHD also have chronic medical conditions unrelated to ADHD.

If you have ADHD, you are best served if your evaluation looks for other illnesses in the family of ADHD illnesses. If you are an adult, you are best served if your chronic illnesses are identified and treated.

Obesity

Diabetes

COPD

Asthma

Hypothyroidism

ADHD, Mood Disorders, and Substance Use Disorders

In my patients who are being treated with Suboxone, I commonly see ADHD. Self-medication for ADHD is an early step into the losses from a disease of addiction.

Full insight into your substance use is essential. Recognition and treatment of bipolar, major depressive disorder, and anxiety all matter.

If Medication is Appropriate

Medication is not automatic. If you do not have ADHD, I will not begin you on stimulants.

If you have conditions that require prior treatments for your safety, those will begin first. Controlled substances such as Adderall are prescribed only when there is a clear medical necessity.

Adderall and other controlled substances are not prescribed for independent performance enhancement.

Why Continuity Matters in Adult ADHD Care

Continuity of care with the same physician improves outcomes for chronic illnesses, including ADHD. Over time, diagnostic accuracy, medication effectiveness and safety, and efficiency increase.
